SBI PO Complete Guide: Eligibility, Pattern & Salary
Updated 19 Jun 2026 · 8 min read
SBI PO is one of the most aspired-to banking jobs in India — it makes you a Probationary Officer at the State Bank of India with a high starting salary, strong perks and quick promotions. SBI conducts this exam on its own, separately from the IBPS PO process used by other public-sector banks.
This guide covers eligibility, the three-phase selection, the salary, and how the merit is calculated. Vacancies, dates and the exact descriptive-test marks change with each notification, so confirm against the official SBI notification on sbi.co.in/careers.
What is SBI PO?
SBI PO recruits Probationary Officers (Junior Management Grade Scale-I) for the State Bank of India. It is conducted independently by SBI through its own advertisement, so it is a separate exam from IBPS PO.
Eligibility
- Education: a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university (final-year students can apply provisionally).
- Age: generally 21–30 years, with standard relaxations for OBC (+3), SC/ST (+5), PwBD and others.
- Attempts: limited by category — typically 6 for General/EWS, 9 for OBC, and no limit (within the age window) for SC/ST.
Exam pattern
SBI PO has three phases. Objective tests carry a penalty of 0.25 mark per wrong answer.
- Phase 1 — Preliminary (qualifying only): 100 questions, 100 marks, 1 hour with sectional timing — English (30), Quantitative Aptitude (35) and Reasoning Ability (35).
- Phase 2 — Main: an objective test of 200 marks (Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness, and English) plus a Descriptive Test (letter and essay writing) — its marks are notification-dependent, so check the current notice.
- Phase 3 — a Psychometric Test, followed by a Group Exercise and Personal Interview (50 marks together).
How final selection works
The Prelims is only a qualifying gate. The final merit combines the Mains and the Group Exercise & Interview in a 75:25 ratio (Mains marks scaled to 75, the GE & Interview to 25), and selection is in merit order, category-wise.
Salary and perks
An SBI PO starts at a basic pay of around ₹48,480 plus about four advance increments, taking the starting basic to roughly ₹56,480. With Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, City Compensatory Allowance and other benefits, in-hand pay is commonly around ₹80,000–₹85,000 a month, and the total cost-to-company is often quoted at around ₹20–22 lakh a year (varying by city).
