SSC CHSL Complete Guide: Posts, Eligibility, Pattern & Salary
Updated 18 Jun 2026 · 9 min read
SSC CHSL — the Combined Higher Secondary Level examination — is one of the most popular ways for 12th-pass candidates to get a stable central government job. Conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, it fills clerical and data-entry posts across central ministries, departments and offices.
This guide covers what SSC CHSL is, the posts it recruits for, who can apply, the full exam pattern and syllabus, the typing/skill test, salary and the selection process. Exact vacancies, dates and occasional pattern tweaks change each year, so always confirm against the official SSC notification on ssc.gov.in.
What is SSC CHSL and which posts does it fill?
SSC CHSL recruits for Group C posts in various central government departments. The main posts are:
- Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA).
- Data Entry Operator (DEO) and DEO Grade 'A'.
- Postal Assistant (PA) / Sorting Assistant (SA) — historically part of CHSL, though these may not appear in every year's notification.
Eligibility and age limit
- Education: 12th standard (Class 12) pass or equivalent from a recognised board. For DEO/DEO Grade 'A' in certain offices (such as C&AG), a 12th pass in the Science stream with Mathematics is required.
- Age: generally 18 to 27 years, with the exact cut-off date set in each notification.
- Age relaxation: typically +3 years for OBC, +5 years for SC/ST, and more for PwD and ex-servicemen, as per rules.
Exam pattern (Tier 1 and Tier 2)
SSC CHSL is a computer-based exam held in two tiers.
Tier 1 is a one-hour objective test of 100 questions for 200 marks (2 marks each), across four sections — General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension — with a 0.50 mark penalty for each wrong answer.
Tier 2 is longer and is the main, merit-deciding stage. It tests Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning, English and General Awareness, plus a Computer Knowledge module, and includes a typing/skill test session. Each objective question carries 3 marks, with a penalty of 1 mark for wrong answers in the main sections.
Syllabus at a glance
- Quantitative Aptitude / Mathematical Abilities — arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, data interpretation.
- English Language & Comprehension — grammar, vocabulary, error spotting, reading comprehension.
- General Intelligence & Reasoning — analogies, series, coding-decoding, puzzles.
- General Awareness — current affairs, history, geography, polity, economy, science.
- Computer Knowledge (Tier 2) — computer basics, MS Office, internet and related topics.
Typing and skill test
The typing/skill test is qualifying only — you must pass it, but its marks do not count toward your final merit.
- DEO / DEO Grade 'A': data-entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour (a 15-minute test). For DEO Grade 'A' in C&AG, the requirement is higher, around 15,000 key depressions per hour.
- LDC / JSA: a typing test of about 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi on a computer.
Salary
SSC CHSL posts fall under the 7th Pay Commission pay levels:
- LDC / JSA: Pay Level 2 (basic pay roughly ₹19,900–₹63,200).
- PA / SA / DEO Grade 'A': Pay Level 4 (basic pay roughly ₹25,500–₹81,100).
- DEO in higher offices: up to Pay Level 5 (basic pay roughly ₹29,200–₹92,300).
- On top of basic pay come Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance (by city class) and Transport Allowance, so in-hand pay varies by post and posting city.
Selection process
The selection runs Tier 1 (screening) → Tier 2 (the main exam plus the skill/typing test) → document verification. The final merit is based on the combined Tier 1 and Tier 2 objective scores; the skill/typing test only has to be passed. SSC CHSL is generally conducted once a year, with the notification usually out around the middle of the year — watch the SSC calendar and notices for exact dates.
