What is SSC Stenographer?
SSC Stenographer fills two grades of stenographer posts: Grade C (the higher grade) and Grade D, across central government ministries, departments and organisations.
Eligibility and age
- Education: a 12th (senior secondary) pass from a recognised board.
- Age: generally 18–30 years for Grade C and 18–27 years for Grade D, with standard category relaxations.
Exam pattern
- An objective computer-based test covering General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language & Comprehension, with negative marking.

The skill test (the key step)
The stenography skill test is qualifying — you must pass it, but it does not add to the merit score:
- Grade C: shorthand dictation at 100 words per minute, then transcription.
- Grade D: shorthand dictation at 80 words per minute, then transcription.
Salary
- Grade C: Pay Level 6 (basic pay around ₹35,400).
- Grade D: Pay Level 4 (basic pay around ₹25,500).
