You do not need a degree to start a government career. Right after Class 12 — and in several cases after Class 10 — you can apply for clerical, railway, defence and police jobs that offer stable pay, allowances and long-term security.

Here are the most popular government jobs you can apply for after 12th, with eligibility and approximate starting pay. Pay figures are 7th Pay Commission basic pay (in-hand varies with city and allowances), and eligibility and age limits change with each year's notification — always confirm on the official site before applying.

SSC exams (central government clerical & support posts)

• SSC CHSL — Lower Division Clerk, Data Entry Operator and Postal/Sorting Assistant. Eligibility: 12th pass (some DEO posts need 12th with Maths). Pay: roughly Level 2–4 (basic ₹19,900–₹25,500).
• SSC Stenographer (Grade C & D) — stenographer posts in central departments. Eligibility: 12th pass. Pay: Grade D around Level 4, Grade C around Level 6.
• SSC MTS — Multi-Tasking Staff and Havaldar. Eligibility: only 10th pass needed. Pay: Level 1 (basic ₹18,000).
• SSC GD Constable — constable in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB and Assam Rifles. Eligibility: only 10th pass needed. Pay: Level 3 (basic ₹21,700).

Railway jobs (RRB)

• RRB NTPC (undergraduate posts) — Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk, Trains Clerk and Commercial-cum-Ticket Clerk. Eligibility: 12th pass. Pay: Level 2–3.

• Indian Army / Navy / Air Force Agniveer (Agnipath) — 4-year engagement. Eligibility varies by trade (10th for some, 12th for technical/clerk and Navy SSR). Stipend rises from about ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 a month with a Seva Nidhi payout after four years.
• Indian Coast Guard (Navik/Yantrik) — Navik GD needs 12th with Maths and Physics; some entries take 10th plus a diploma.

• State Police Constable — recruited by each state's police board (Delhi Police via SSC). Eligibility: usually 12th pass (some states accept 10th) plus a physical test. Pay: mostly Level 3 (basic ₹21,700).
• India Post GDS (Gramin Dak Sevak) — Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak. Eligibility: 10th pass; selection is on 10th marks (no written exam).

• LIC Assistant and SBI Apprentice — need a degree.
